What are Pregnancy Scans?
Are ultrasound scans safe during pregnancy?
Yes, absolutely safe.
Ultrasound uses sound waves (not radiation) to create images of your baby. It is non-invasive, painless, and poses no harm to mother or baby.
Do I need any preparation before the scan?
- For early pregnancy or pelvic scans, a full bladder helps get a clearer image — drink 3–4 glasses of water about 30–45 minutes before the scan
- For later pregnancy scans, a full bladder is not necessary
- Wear comfortable clothing that allows easy access to the abdomen.

More Frequently Asked Questions
How long does the scan take?
Usually 15–30 minutes, depending on the type of scan and baby’s position.
Can my partner or family member be present during the scan?
Yes, we encourage a supportive environment. One family member may accompany you during the scan.
What if my baby doesn’t move or is not in the right position?
Sometimes the baby may be resting or lying in a position that makes imaging difficult. The sonographer may ask you to walk, change position, or wait a few minutes before re-scanning.
Will I get a scan report immediately?
Yes, the report and images are usually ready within 30–45 minutes after the scan.
What if any abnormality is found?
If the radiologist detects any abnormal findings, the report will be shared with your gynecologist, who may recommend further evaluation or follow-up scans.
Our radiology team ensures confidentiality and professional communication with your doctor.
How many scans are usually needed during pregnancy?
Most pregnancies require at least three routine scans:
- Early scan (6–8 weeks)
- NT scan (11–13 weeks)
- Anomaly scan (18–22 weeks)
Further growth and Doppler scans may be advised based on your doctor’s guidance.
How often can I repeat scans?
Scans are usually done as per your obstetrician’s recommendation.
Unnecessary or frequent scans are not needed, but medically advised follow-ups are completely safe.
Will I get baby pictures or videos?
Yes! On request, Mitra Diagnostics can provide printed or digital ultrasound images of your baby — a precious keepsake for parents.
Can I know the baby’s gender during the scan?
No.
As per the Government of India’s PCPNDT Act, it is illegal to reveal or determine the sex of the baby before birth.
Our radiologists and staff strictly comply with this law to ensure ethical medical practice and respect for life.
During every pregnancy scan, our focus is on:
- Checking baby’s health, growth, and organ development
- Assessing placenta, amniotic fluid, and fetal well-being
- Detecting any developmental abnormalities early for proper medical care
We request all parents to avoid asking for gender information, as it cannot and will not be disclosed under any circumstances.
At Mitra Diagnostics, we are a PCPNDT-registered diagnostic centre, ensuring:
-100% compliance with legal norms
-Accurate and ethical pregnancy imaging
-Respect, safety, and confidentiality for every patient
