More Frequently Asked Questions
How should I prepare for the test?
Follow these simple steps:
- – Maintain 2–5 days of abstinence (no ejaculation) before giving the sample.
- – Avoid alcohol, smoking, and fever during this period as they affect sperm quality.
- – Inform the lab about any medications you are taking.
How is the sample collected?
- – The sample is collected by masturbation into a sterile container provided by the lab.
- – Collection is done in a private, comfortable room at Mitra Diagnostics.
- – If collected at home, bring the sample to the lab within 30–45 minutes while keeping it at body temperature.
Do I need to prepare for the test?
No special preparation is required.
- – You can eat and drink normally before the test.
- – If you use eye drops or medication, continue them as advised by your doctor.
- – Try not to wear eye makeup or contact lenses on the day of the scan.
Can a condom be used for sample collection?
No. Regular condoms contain chemicals that can harm sperm.
If necessary, the lab can provide a special sterile collection condom designed for semen testing.
What if I cannot produce the sample at the lab?
You may collect the sample at home, provided you follow all instructions carefully and deliver it promptly to the lab.
Avoid contamination with water, soap, or lubricants.
When will I get my report?
The report is usually ready within a few hours at Mitra Diagnostics and can be sent online or via WhatsApp.
What do the results mean?
Normal results usually include:
- – Volume: 1.5–6 ml
- – Sperm Count: ≥15 million/ml
- – Motility: ≥40% motile sperm
- – Normal forms: ≥4% (by strict criteria)
Abnormal results may indicate:
- – Low count (oligospermia)
- – Poor motility (asthenospermia)
- – Abnormal forms (teratospermia)
- – No sperm (azoospermia)
Your doctor will interpret these results and recommend further evaluation if needed.
Can semen from my sample be used for another patient’s treatment (like IUI)?
No. Your sample is used only for your own testing.
Each patient’s sample is handled individually and confidentially under strict quality and ethical guidelines at Mitra Diagnostics.
What factors can affect semen quality?
- – Stress and lack of sleep
- – Smoking, alcohol, or drug use
- – Prolonged heat exposure (sauna, hot baths)
- – Obesity or chronic illness
- – Certain medications and infections
Can the test detect infection?
Yes. The presence of pus cells, bacteria, or abnormal pH can suggest infection or inflammation of the reproductive tract.
Further culture tests can be advised if needed.
Is the test confidential?
Absolutely. At Mitra Diagnostics, all semen tests are handled with complete privacy and confidentiality.
Results are shared only with you or your doctor.
Is a repeat test ever required?
Yes. Since sperm count and motility can vary daily, it’s often recommended to repeat the test after 2–3 weeks to confirm results.
