What is an Endometrial Biopsy?
An Endometrial Biopsy is a simple and minimally invasive test used to examine the inner lining of the uterus (endometrium).
A small tissue sample is taken from the uterus and examined under the microscope to detect abnormalities, hormonal effects, infections, or cancerous changes.
Why is an Endometrial Biopsy done?
Your doctor may advise this test to:
- Investigate abnormal uterine bleeding (heavy, irregular, or postmenopausal bleeding)
- Check for endometrial hyperplasia or cancer
- Evaluate hormonal effects on the uterus (especially in infertility workup)
- Assess endometrial response to hormonal therapy
- Investigate absence of periods (amenorrhea)
- Rule out infections or chronic endometritis
How is the procedure done?
At Mitra Diagnostics, the procedure is performed with comfort and care:
- You will lie on an examination table.
- A speculum is gently inserted to view the cervix.
- A thin, flexible suction tube (called a Pipelle) or curette is inserted into the uterus.
- A small sample of endometrial tissue is collected.
- The sample is then sent to the Histopathology department for microscopic evaluation.
The entire procedure usually takes less than 30 minutes.
