More Frequently Asked Questions
Is any preparation required?
No special preparation is needed.
You can eat, drink, and take your medications as usual.
Wear loose, comfortable clothing that allows easy access to the area being scanned.
How is the scan performed?
- – You’ll be positioned so the area of interest is easily accessible.
- – A clear gel is applied to the skin to help sound waves pass smoothly.
- – The radiologist moves a small handheld probe (transducer) over the area.
- – The images appear in real time on a monitor.
- – The scan usually takes 15–20 minutes.
You may be asked to move the joint gently during the scan to assess its function.
Is the scan painful?
- No. The procedure is completely painless.
Only slight pressure may be felt as the probe is moved over the skin.
What are the benefits of MSK ultrasound?
- Non-invasive and radiation-free
– Real-time movement assessment of tendons and joints
– Dynamic comparison of both sides (normal vs affected)
– Detects inflammation, fluid, tears, or cysts quickly
– Ideal for sports injuries and chronic pain evaluation
– Can guide joint aspirations or injections (ultrasound-guided procedures)
What conditions can it detect?
A musculoskeletal ultrasound can detect:
- – Tendon tears (like rotator cuff, Achilles tendon)
- – Tendonitis and bursitis
- – Ligament sprains or partial tears
- – Joint effusion (fluid buildup)
- – Arthritis and synovial thickening
- – Muscle injury or hematoma
- – Nerve compression or swelling
- – Ganglion cysts or lipomas
- – Foreign bodies (metal, glass, wood fragments)
When will I get my report?
Reports are typically ready within 30–45 minutes after your scan.
Is it safe?
Yes.
Musculoskeletal ultrasound is completely safe, as it uses sound waves instead of X-rays or radiation.
It can be done repeatedly, even in pregnant women or children, if required.
Summary
A USG Musculoskeletal / Joint scan is a safe, quick, and effective way to diagnose joint pain, swelling, or soft tissue injuries without radiation.
At Mitra Diagnostics, every scan is performed with care, precision, and patient comfort as top priorities.
