What is Body Fluid Analysis?
What types of body fluids can be tested?
- Pleural fluid – from the space around the lungs
- Ascitic (peritoneal) fluid – from the abdominal cavity
- Pericardial fluid – from around the heart
- Synovial (joint) fluid – from joints like the knee or shoulder
- CSF (Cerebrospinal Fluid) – from around the brain and spinal cord (in selected cases)
Why is fluid analysis done?
- Identify the cause of fluid accumulation (infection, cancer, liver or heart disease, etc.)
- Detect bacterial, viral, or tuberculosis infection
- Check for malignant (cancer) cells
- Assess protein, sugar, and cell content in the fluid
- Differentiate between transudate and exudate (to find whether the fluid is due to systemic or local disease)

More Frequently Asked Questions
How is the sample collected?
The sample is collected by a trained doctor using sterile techniques:
- – Pleural fluid: by thoracentesis
- – Ascitic fluid: by paracentesis
- – Pericardial fluid: by pericardiocentesis
- – Synovial fluid: by joint aspiration
Local anesthesia is given to minimize discomfort, and the procedure is safe and quick.
The collected fluid is then sent to Mitra Diagnostics Laboratory for analysis.
What tests are done on the fluid sample?
Depending on the clinical need, the following examinations may be performed:
- – Physical examination: color, appearance, and quantity
- – Chemical analysis: protein, glucose, LDH, ADA, etc.
- – Microscopic examination: total and differential cell count
- – Cytology: to detect cancer cells
- – Microbiology: culture and sensitivity, Gram stain, AFB, or fungal studies
What can the results tell?
Fluid analysis helps identify the cause and nature of the fluid collection:
- – Infection (bacterial, TB, viral) – high white cells, organisms seen
- – Cancer involvement – presence of malignant cells
- – Heart, liver, or kidney disease – transudative fluid (low protein)
- – Inflammation or autoimmune disorder – elevated protein, LDH, or cell count
Your doctor will correlate the findings with your clinical condition and imaging results.
How long does it take to get the report?
- – Routine fluid analysis: within 1–2 working days
- – Cytology or culture results: may take 3–5 days, depending on the tests required
Is any preparation needed before fluid collection?
Generally, no special preparation is required.
Your doctor may ask you to:
- – Avoid food or drink for a few hours if sedation is planned
- -Stop certain blood-thinning medicines before the procedure
All precautions will be explained before the test.
Are there any risks in fluid collection?
The procedure is generally safe and done under sterile conditions.
Minor risks like mild pain, bruising, or temporary discomfort may occur but are uncommon.
In Summary
