What is a Pap Smear test?
A Pap Smear (Papanicolaou test) is a simple and quick cancer screening test in Hyderabad used to detect cervical cancer and pre-cancerous changes in the cervix, which is the lower part of the uterus. This test helps identify abnormal cells at an early stage—often before any symptoms appear—allowing timely treatment and prevention of cervical cancer.
Why is a Pap Smear important?
Cervical cancer usually develops slowly over several years. Regular Pap Smear testing plays a key role as a cancer screening test in Hyderabad by helping detect:
- Early pre-cancerous cell changes (dysplasia)
- Infections or inflammation of the cervix
- Changes caused by Human Papillomavirus (HPV)
- Early-stage cervical cancer, when treatment is most effective
Regular screening has significantly reduced cervical cancer-related deaths worldwide.
Who should get a Pap Smear done?
According to medical guidelines:
- Women aged 21–65 years should undergo regular Pap Smear screening
- Women aged 21–30 years: every 3 years
- Women aged 30–65 years: every 3–5 years, depending on HPV testing results
- Women above 65 years or those who had a total hysterectomy may not need screening if previous results were normal.
Your gynecologist can advise the most appropriate screening schedule based on your health history.

More Frequently Asked Questions
When is the best time to get a Pap Smear?
The ideal time is:
- 10–20 days after the start of your last menstrual period
Avoid during menstruation or active vaginal infections
How is the Pap Smear procedure done?
At Mitra Diagnostics, the procedure is quick, safe, and painless:
- The patient lies comfortably on an examination table.
- A speculum is gently inserted to view the cervix.
- A soft brush or spatula is used to collect a small sample of cells from the cervix.
- The sample is then spread on a glass slide or preserved in liquid medium and sent to the lab for cytological examination.
The whole process takes less than 5 minutes.
Is the test painful?
No. Most women feel mild discomfort or pressure, but the test is generally not painful and does not require anesthesia.
Is any preparation needed before the test?
Yes. Follow these simple steps for accurate results:
- – Avoid sexual intercourse for 24–48 hours before the test
- – Do not use vaginal creams, sprays, or medicines for 2 days prior
- – Avoid douching or tampon use before the test
- – Schedule the test when not menstruating
What does the Pap Smear report show?
The report may show:
- – Normal / Negative for intraepithelial lesion (healthy cells)
- – Infection or inflammation (bacterial, fungal, viral)
- – Atypical cells (minor changes, often due to infection)
- – Precancerous changes (Low or High-grade lesions)
- – Cancerous cells (if present – requires further evaluation)
What if my report is abnormal?
An abnormal result does not always mean cancer.
It may be due to infection, inflammation, or minor changes.
Your doctor may suggest:
- – Repeat Pap test after 3–6 months
- – HPV DNA test
- – Colposcopy or cervical biopsy for confirmation
Mitra Diagnostics provides HPV DNA testing and cytology correlation for accurate evaluation.
How often should I repeat the test?
- – Every 3 years for women aged 21–30
- – Every 3–5 years for women aged 30–65 (if combined with HPV testing)
More frequent testing may be needed if you have: - – History of abnormal Pap results
- – HPV infection
- – Weakened immunity or HIV infection
Can a Pap Smear detect other diseases?
Yes. In addition to cervical cancer, it may also indicate:
- – Vaginal or cervical infections
- – Fungal (yeast) or bacterial vaginosis
- – Trichomonas infection
These can then be treated appropriately.
How soon will I get my report?
- – Routine Pap Smear report: within 2–3 working days
- – LBC / HPV co-testing: may take 3–5 working days
